Description
On Thursday January 28th at 6:30 pm in the DC3 Little Theater join DC3 faculty for the inaugural Conq Talk: Comic Books & Our World. More than the comic strips you see in the paper and more than light reading for kids, comic books have long functioned as cultural barometers that indicate current social issues and, sometimes, advocate for social change. With highly successful films releasing nearly every year, the universe of comic books has become more recognizable and accessible to larger numbers and more diverse groups of people. Of course, with visibility comes scrutiny and, in many ways, this panel will explore both what comics have given us, as well as where they still fail us. Panel members will examine and discuss a variety of comic books from multiple perspectives. Rodney Clayton, Associate Professor Sociology at DC3, focuses on the Spider-Man story ?The Night Gwen Stacy Died? and the impact of this storyline on comics of the time and those that followed. Dr. Jennifer Krisuk, Assistant Professor of English at DC3, will explore comic books from a feminist perspective, with special emphasis placed on X-Men characters Jean Grey and Emma Frost. Professor of Business Doris Donovan and Professor of Biology Dr. Mary Scott will both present their first impression of comic books and discuss expectations and preconceptions they held and if their views have been altered in any way.
